The Primary…. Mission Accomplished!

The Primary:
How big is your bedroom? Are you lucky enough to have a decent sized space? Although I did consider myself lucky to have a wonderful primary bedroom before the addition, with lots of windows and a decent size 1940’s closet…I wanted this new bedroom to be big! Did I need all that space? No. Did it have to be huge? No. I wanted it to FEEL big though. Mission accomplished. The bedroom is not huge, but it’s not small either. It’s roomy! The other bedrooms in the house are both 11’ x 11’. The new one is 15’11" x 15'4". So, it’s not huge, but it’s decent size! It’s amazing how much just a couple of extra feet will make it feel!
So like I said somewhere else, we ended up with a weird door placement again right next to the bed, but that was my doing! I had planned for the bed to be on that wall, because I wanted the bed to face the two windows in the bedroom. I originally dreamt of having mechanical blinds so that in the morning, I could push a button and open the blinds and see into our yard while I woke up sleepily, but that was not in the budget, so for the time being we just have regular wooden blinds! I’m laying in bed right now writing this! The king size bed is perfectly centered in between the windows - planned out by me! Then there is a dresser from the other room that used to be a dark stained espresso color. I painted it white and put it between the two windows so we could put the TV up there. The perfect spot! The chair in the corner was an immediate wish! I have a picture of someone else’s chair in the corner all dressed up with an end table, plant and ottoman, that I cut out of a magazine and put on a bulletin board or in a binder somewhere. They made it look so good. I wanted to do that! So I ordered a chair, put it together, with a little help from T & T - thank you!! Then I found a throw blanket that I had laying around and an extra pillow from the couch and threw it on the chair with the little gray pillow it came with and voila! Now, Mick’s quite good at styling and he came behind me and fixed the throw blanket LOL. Apparently my throw blanket styling skills are not the best! Anyways, I did copy the picture and I did buy a plant and an end table, and Tami gave me a great lamp. The plant ended up in the dining room. The table was just a temporary $10 Amazon metal table that, years later still lives there, but the lamp is absolute perfection! I never did get an ottoman, but I still do look for one. Have you seen the prices of ottomans?! Geesh! If I had all the money in the world, I would have all of the stuff - the perfect stuff, but sometimes I think finding little bits and pieces here and there is more fun. It gives you a reason to go to that thrift store or to Renningers in Mount Dora and just wander. Maybe one day I’ll find my perfect table and ottoman to go with the perfect chair and lamp that we have! (We are going to Renningers this weekend)!!
Oh and next to the beautiful gray chair is a wonderful modern metal and wood skinny console table that Mick brought home one day. I immediately knew where to put it! Under the old kitchen window (let’s talk about that next!) and next to the chair. I knew it was a tight squeeze and might not fit in the space or be an awkward placement, but Mick reassured me that it looked great! I totally trust his opinion on things like that. So the console table lives there now. I threw some cute little IKEA fake plants up there and called it a day! (I am obsessed with cute little fake plants)!!

Now, back to the kitchen windows! So the new Primary Bedroom was built behind the kitchen. We left the windows in on purpose just because structurally it was easier to leave them in and cover them up and keep as much of the brick intact. I had a plan for the kitchen side. On the bedroom side I bought some of that fake brick paneling that looks like it’s made from really thick cardboard. I had someone throw it up there to cover the old hole where the windows were and then I painted it to match the brick around it. It’s not perfect, but it looks pretty neat and adds interest to that wall as we left the old brick window ledge so you can tell something used to be there. Then it came time to figure out what to put up there…Originally, in our plans, we had talked about putting one of those fake wall mounted fireplaces up there, to add some cozy to the room. That plan kind of went by the wayside, when I found a really neat round giant “dish” to hang up there. It was lightweight (so much easier to hang), so I felt confident that it was a good choice and it was really pretty, and the colors matched the giant abstract picture hanging on the wall directly across from it! Speaking of the giant picture on the other wall….it’s massive!!! That picture kind of set the stage for the room….well, maybe let’s say for the color scheme of the room…The bed was really the original inspiration of this room! Now typically, my color schemes and room decor all center around back. Black light fixtures, black or dark fans, black everything! So, I was trying to be a little different this time around and went for silver! That’s where the giant picture swayed me and pulled me. I really do love it! To me it looks like a glittery sparkly ocean wave. Relaxing and beautiful, but abstract. Did you notice that sparkle is also one of the focal points of the home page on my website? Cool eh?! Inspiration comes from everywhere!

The Bed:
My gosh, I love this bed! I think I first saw it on an episode of Fixer Upper. That's when I realized that I needed this bed! And, that’s when I started searching for pictures of it and then searching to buy it. I bought everything I could in advance, so that when it was time to put something in, we just had it…no last minute searching in a rush and settling…nope, I researched and combed the internet for my perfect things to bring our addition to reality. Now, of course it would be great if we were rich and could just buy the original, but I had to bargain hunt and I did. And let me tell you, I think this bed is the best bargain of all of the addition! I got it at Home Depot and boy oh boy did I get it for a steal! You see, normally I’m not good at patience, but this time my patience paid off. And then I ordered the bed! Of course the day came to pick it up and I wanted to go get it immediately, so they didn’t accidentally give it to someone else!!! Irrational, I know, but when you find a deal this good, you’re afraid you may lose it! Mick was busy working on something and was like, "Just take the truck and go get it". "They’ll load it for you"! "You’ll be fine"! Now I was not nervous about going to get it. I was worried about driving the giant truck on the interstate! But, I did it! It did not fall out and I did not die driving home from Home Depot in a giant truck with three giant boxes in the truck bed. Hurray! And then it sat in the garage for ages, waiting for its day to shine! And boy does it shine!

The Rug:
And don't forget about my dream rug! This 7' x 10' rug came from Target and was the "Vintage Tufted Distressed" rug in Gray. I actually love this rug so much that I have a 5' x 7' in the cream color in my living room and also a 2'6" x 3'9" in the gray color by my back door. If I like something a lot, I typically buy it in lots of colors! If you want to know more about how my dream rug came to be, check out my Blog Post about the Addition! The Juju Hat That Once Was:
OMG, this was the perfect addition to my beautiful new bedroom and I was in SERIOUS LOVE. Even Mick was impressed with the Juju Hat! It looked so designer and so grown up. I can’t remember exactly how I found it, but I must have been scrolling through Etsy one day and it must have been a “promoted” item, as I did not directly search for this. When I saw it, I knew that I had to have it. AND IT WAS ON SALE!! 60% OFF SALE! WOOT WOOT! One of my very favorite ways to buy! Now I didn’t realize the significance of this hat when I found it. I was drawn to it’s beauty first. However, I found out that it symbolizes prosperity and freedom, as well as wealth and social status. These Juju hats were worn by royalty and chiefs! I read somewhere that it takes 2 to 3 days to complete one hat. This one was handmade in Cameroon, Africa. All of these things make it even more special. And then bad things happened with the Juju hat - ugh. I came home from a weekend away – probably having been on a cruise with my sister and I felt “crumbs” in the bed. I was laying there and had stretched my arm out across the sheets and thought, ewww, Mick were you eating in the bed again? He said no, but there was clearly “crumbs” in the bed…and OMG when I realized that the crumbs were moth poop, that came from my beloved Juju hat, IN MY BED, I about died. Now I had seen a moth or two here and there, but we go in and out of the house all the time to sit on the back porch, so I just assumed it’s a buggy time of year – blah, blah, blah. Needless to say the bed and pillows were stripped and cleaned, and my beautiful (poopy) Juju hat had to come down off the wall. We tried blowing them off, picking them off, spraying it with all kinds of stuff, and eventually we just stuffed it in a large garbage bag, tied it up extremely tight and threw it up on the top shelf in the closet. Apparently, there is “maintenance” to a Juju hat. You are supposed to spray it every month or so with anti moth spray of some kind – I literally just read this today as I’m writing this up. If only I had known, but luckily I do now! So, writing this is now my inspiration to go get that Juju hat out of the trash bag, clean off the moth carcuses (gross) and treat it with spray, and hang this thing above the mantle in the living room! It will be a total stunner when you walk through the front door and if anything bad happens again, at least it won’t be in the bed!! Wait for it…I’ll post it in a few weeks in my Diaries!
